Conceptually, New Year's Eve is brilliant. You know, out with the old; in with the new, soirees, fresh starts, and parties!
To be sure, advertisers make New Year's Eve seem glamorous; beautiful women in dazzling dresses on the arms of handsome men drinking sparkling cocktails in an elegant setting, laughing as the soft lighting glints off their perfectly aligned teeth and shiny hair, whilst they mingle and wait for their midnight kiss.
But make no mistake: These advertisements are no testament to reality.
In real life, the beautiful commercial people are replaced by slightly bloated post-holiday-feasters, lounging around the house in sweatpants, working puzzles and watching Dick Clark.
No matter how grandiose and spectacular your plans may be, disappointment inevitably follows because New Years, simply by virtue of its calendar placement, is a foreordained letdown. Thanksgiving and Christmas are tough - virtually impossible - acts to follow. Couple that with the burn bans preventing fireworks, and New Year's falls second only to President's Day as my least favorite holiday.
hear hear. what a letdown.
