Do you ever find yourself liking things that you know you shouldn't? Like certain pop icons or ultra-tacky clothing styles or songs and movies you know are terrible, but you just can't stop yourself from liking? It's embarrassing. So, I was on my way out of town this weekend with my younger brother and some of his friends. And they are cool kids. And I can't live up to their standards, so I am feeling the pressure to be cool. They decide that it would be a good idea to pull out my ipod and put it on shuffle, insisting that we listen to the entirety of every song.
*Note: I rarely listen to more than 35 seconds of any song, so this was a torturous feat in itself . It induces a feeling of panic when that 35 second mark passes and I know that I will not be able to avert the tedium that comes with a second verse.*
So, little do these people know that I actually have a playlist entitled "Songs I Am Embarrassed to Love." And, naturally, according to the laws that rule my life, 3 of the first 5 songs came from this list. I instantly recognized the first notes and I began to dread the onslaught of comments I knew I was sure to receive. However, instead there was an awkward silence broken by the admission: "I love the Spice Girls." There it was. The affirmation I needed. They too harbored secret loves of the Spice Girls and Mariah Carey. I guess we all like things that we know are ridiculous. These things can shame us, and people may make fun of us. But the fact is, the people who make fun of you for liking it probably like it themselves and are too embarrassed to admit it.
I would be interested to know what kinds of things other people love, but are embarrassed to admit. What a great compilation book that could make. Maybe I'll do that instead of travel books. Stupid Rick Steves.
My embarrassing loves include "Camp Nowhere", "L-O-V-E" by Ashlee Simpson, and Elimidate.
ReplyDelete"Rhinestone Cowboy" by Glenn Cambell, and pretty much any of Elton John's hits. Maybe "Summer Breeze," by Seals and Crofts. Why is it that all the revolting pop songs that I like were made before I was born?
