Down with Double Speak

I started working on a resume today. However, I soon realized: I have no idea what I'm doing - in a big way.

I have no idea how to write a resume. I don't really know what a cover letter is. I don't know how or where to look for jobs. I am terrible in interviews. I've never balanced my checkbook and I don't really know how to make a budget.

I'm completely ill-equiped for life.

I've been doing research, and the most troubling thing is the cloaked "language" of resumes. I can't just write, or "I work with volunteers" or "I write new policies." I have to use the special code and say things like "civic engagement" and "innovative structuring." It's so pompus. I don't even know what they mean.

Why can't I just write "I make cool brochures and answer the phone." I bet a resume like that would catch an employer's eye.

And for the record, I will never use the words "team player" on a resume.

  1. How about "I am smart, can do the job, and I am a hard worker." Yeah, I guess that won't work. What more can an employer want? Good thing you are a good writer and have a good vocabulary... but I guess that's not something you can put down on a resume either.
Maybe you should make an acrostic resume with your name.

  2. I totally understand about not knowing how to write a resume. What is also confusing is it seems to keep changing. One site will say one thing another something else. I am thankful that I had one already and then had my sister help me revamp it. It was still overwelming. My sister said that she had her Brother-in-law look over it because he did some hiring. He wasn't in the dental hygine profession but he did look at resume's. All she wanted to know is would this catch your eye. If you know someone that has done some hiring you might have them look over your resume and give pointers. Good luck.
